A SENSE OF BALANCE

For Mood, Rest and Everyday Wellbeing

There are days when familiar things ask a little more of us. The plans we have made, the company we enjoy, even the prospect of sleep can feel different with a change in mood. How we feel lends its own colour to everyday life.

SEREN helps promote healthy mood balance and supports sleep, bringing attention to the relationship between our days and nights. A place for emotional wellbeing within the rituals through which we care for ourselves.

Its support also extends to helping relieve symptoms of fibromyalgia and, when taken preventively, reducing the severity and duration of migraines. These less visible experiences, too, deserve a considered place in the care of daily life.

L'ORIGINE DU NOM

An Expression of Serenity

SEREN takes its inspiration from serenity—a word that evokes composure, a sense of ease, and the quiet pleasure of feeling at peace with oneself.

Within the name, EN forms the signature of E.N. Biomédical. The two come together naturally, with the company’s initials woven into the very word that inspired it.

Simple in its construction and soft in its sound, SEREN carries an intention: to give serenity a name of its own.

L’essence révélée

The Chemistry Behind the Name

Behind the unfamiliar name 5-Hydroxy-L-tryptophan lies a connection between plants and the human body.

More simply known as 5-HTP, this amino acid derivative occurs in the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia and is also formed naturally within us.

UNE PAGE D'HISTOIRE

In West Africa, Griffonia simplicifolia has a place in both traditional medicine and everyday life. Ethnobotanical accounts describe preparations of its leaves and stems used to wash wounds, while in Ghana, its fibrous stems served as chewing sponges for cleaning teeth.

A different aspect of the plant came into focus through twentieth-century chemistry. In 1970, researchers Linda E. Fellows and E. A. Bell reported high concentrations of 5-HTP in its mature seeds, documenting a distinctive feature of this West African climbing shrub.

The seeds would become an important source of 5-HTP for modern preparations—adding a new chapter to the story of a plant whose uses once centred on its leaves, stems and roots.

For SEREN, Griffonia provides the botanical source. The focus rests on a particular molecule within its seeds: a compound with a defined identity and a place in the body’s production of serotonin.

This relationship begins with tryptophan, an essential amino acid obtained through food. The body transforms tryptophan into 5-HTP, then converts 5-HTP into serotonin—a chemical messenger involved in regulating mood, sleep and appetite.

The term precursor describes this role. It means that 5-HTP is a substance from which the body makes another. Although closely connected, tryptophan, 5-HTP and serotonin are distinct compounds, each occupying its own step in this sequence.

That distinction gives the ingredient its scientific interest. Understanding 5-HTP means considering both what it is and what the body can make from it, without reducing the complexity of mood or sleep to a single molecule.

Precision also matters in how its quantity is expressed. The amount of 5-HTP identifies the compound itself, rather than the total weight of the seeds from which it originates. SEREN provides 100 mg of 5-HTP per capsule, alongside 360 mg of soy lecithin.

Soy lecithin introduces a different aspect of the formulation’s chemistry. It is a mixture containing phospholipids, including phosphatidylcholine. Where 5-HTP names an individual molecule, lecithin describes a group of lipid constituents—a distinction that helps clarify the character of each ingredient.

Health Canada’s 5-HTP monograph includes helping promote healthy mood balance and relieving sleep disturbances associated with mood imbalance. It also includes specified uses for fibromyalgia symptoms, preventive migraine support and weight management, each subject to its own conditions of use.

These applications give context to the ingredient, while its identity remains precise: a plant-sourced compound that also belongs to the body’s own chemistry.

Within SEREN, this meeting of botanical origin and physiological relevance forms the essence of the formulation—a connection made tangible through the details of its composition.

AU-DELÀ DE L’EXTRAIT

De la botanique à la physiologie

The passage from wakefulness to sleep, the feeling of fullness after a meal, the changes in our emotional state: each involves signals exchanged within the body. Among the chemical messengers participating in this communication is serotonin, whose influence extends across several aspects of daily life.

SEREN’s 5-HTP enters this physiology through the digestive tract. Following oral intake, it is absorbed into the circulation. Some is converted into serotonin outside the brain, while some can cross the blood–brain barrier—the selective boundary that controls which substances pass from the bloodstream into brain tissue.

This ability matters. Serotonin itself does not readily cross that boundary, but 5-HTP can reach the brain and serve as material for its production there. Enzymes then convert it into serotonin, making it available to participate in communication between nerve cells.

The effects of this communication depend on where signals are received and which receptors respond. Serotonin has many roles, and its involvement in mood, appetite and sleep forms part of a wider network of biological processes.

The connection to sleep extends further. In the pineal gland, a small structure within the brain, serotonin is also used to produce melatonin, a hormone that helps signal biological night. This conversion follows the body’s daily timing system, influenced by light and darkness.

These pathways explain why 5-HTP has attracted interest in research on mood and sleep. They provide a biological rationale, while clinical studies are needed to establish whether a particular preparation and dose offer a meaningful benefit.

For SEREN, this is the passage from botanical source to physiological role: a seed-derived molecule absorbed, transformed and incorporated into the body’s intricate systems of communication.
